藿烷是石油和煤中常见的生物标志物。藿烷不是由生物体直接合成的,而是由死亡生物体经地球化学过程演化而来的.在早期成岩作用过程中形成的饱和烃类藿烷在构型上均以生物构型(R)为主.在成岩过程中藿烷类化合物由生物构型逐渐转变为地质构型(S),最后达到S型与R型的平衡状态[S/(S+R)=0.6].在水样中检出藿烷,而且22S/(22s+22R)17(H)21(H)构型升藿烷比值大于0.5,可以推断饮用水源水体已受到化石燃料的污染。
